This report gives results of the 2009 regional trials coordinated by CIMMYT in eastern and southern Africa. The trials evaluated elite pre-release and released maize germplasm supplied by CIMMYT, National Agricultural Research Programs, and private seed companies from the region. CIMMYT received the germplasm, grouped it according to vigor and maturity, and formed six replicated trials. These results are useful for National Agricultural Research Programs, private seed companies and seed distributing agencies.

Many poor and marginalized farmers in eastern and southern Africa depend on maize for their livelihoods. Isolated from main market centers, these smallholder farmers recycle their seed, growing the same low-yielding varieties they have grown for years–varieties that barely yield enough for the farming family to survive. Nevertheless, there is hope for improvement: newer and better seed varieties can increase maize yields and withstand harsh conditions, such as drought. This brief covers the constraints in release of varieties, trade-related challenges, and offers suggestions for solutions. The survey collected baseline data on farm households to construct indicators for measuring changes in the adoption of improved maize varieties and for assessing impact on adopting households. The main objective of the study was to understand the potential use of the drought tolerant maize (DTM) technology by farmers, provide information for policy makers, and serve as a baseline for measuring impacts of the project.
